Trad climbing… and a few essential lessons learnt!

After October’s unstable weather, MRCC members were able to enjoy the great outdoors again last Sunday, and headed to the Honey Buttress section of Wied il-Għasel with its routes of varying difficulty. This week, experienced MRCC member Alexia Chapman, now residing in the UK, joined the group during her short visit to Malta, to re-discover the routes our islands have to offer.

Andrew and Roland first set up Fly With Me VS 4c and Honey Bee VS 4c, which were attempted by Alexia, Marlon, Hannah and Keith. Roland Sultana also led Honey and Cream E2 5C, while Andrew succeeded in leading the tricky and climb A Taste of Honey E5 6a/b (7a+), which was then top roped by Roland Sultana and Miriam Gauci.

In the afternoon, Andrew gave the less-experienced climbers a hands-on ‘tutorial’ about the essential procedures of abseiling off bolts, belaying from the top of a route, setting up a top rope in the safest possible way, and last but not least – coiling a rope properly! These techniques are essential to becoming more independent climbers and so that in turn, they could pass on the ‘knowledge’ to new club members.
